Perennials: In this article you can get an answer to; where can I find information about planting bulbs, and perennials together? Perennials are the basic flowers of any garden. Each year they die and renew themselves for the next growing season. They are long-lived and last for many seasons. Perennials are also, historically, among our oldest plants. They have been cultivated for centuries and often, as a result of breeding and crossbreeding, bear no resemblance to their wild forebears.

In some of the perennials, the blossoms have become so specialized through centuries of cultivation that they no longer grow 'seeds. Other perennials are continually being developed by amateur botanists and gardeners. As a result of this cultivation and inbreeding, perennials as a rule are not as hardy as other varieties. Another disadvantage is the tendency of certain perennials to die down after flowering, thereby leaving gaps in the garden. There are a number of ways to solve the problems of short-flowering periods and the resultant unsightly spaces.

One way is to intersperse them by planting bulbs and perennials along with annuals and flowering plants whose bloom occurs either later or earlier than that of the perennials. Some perennials are easy to transplant: chrysanthemums, for example, can be moved from one place to another with no noticeable effect on their vigor. This is another way to keep color and bloom throughout the growing season. A garden of perennials, either by themselves or mixed with annuals and other bulbs, should be placed along a path, or as a border, with a background of trees, shrubs, a wall or fence. The background shows the brilliant coloring to best advantage.

Some varieties can flourish in the shade, such as anemone, lily of the valley, day lilies, sweet pea, primrose, hollyhock, harebell and peonies, but these flowers must be chosen carefully and faced so that some sun reaches them every day. Popular orange flower perennials include

Butterfly Weed
Golden Glow
Olympic Poppy
and popular white and purple flower perennials include

Alpine Rock Cress
Baby's Breath
Canyon Poppy
Shasta Daisy
and

Dragon's Head
Foxglove Penstemon
Joe-Pye Weed
respectively.Bulbs, tubers and corms: Bulbs are the fleshy underground protuberances of leaves, stems or roots. Actually, "bulb" is a generic term, and some of these underground protuberances, all of which will grow into full plants, are more correctly called "corms" or "tubers." Tubers are thickened stem sections, covered with modified buds; corms are also underground stem sections, but without the bud. Some of the loveliest flowers are bulbs, and gardeners rely on them heavily because they bloom in such profusion with little care or cultivation. They are among the first blooms of early spring, with the diminutive snowdrop, for example, appearing in early March.

Planting Bulbs: Here is the answer to; where can I find information about planting bulbs? Bulbs should be planted from 3 to 6 inches deep, and, as a rule of thumb, the larger the bulb, the deeper it should be planted. (Both tubers and corms are treated similar to bulbs.) Using a spade, a slice is dug in the soil to the required depth, the bulbs placed in the hole and the sod replaced. If the soil is poor, a sprinkling of bone meal is added and mixed with the soil at the bottom of the hole. Each spring, flowering bulbs should be well-fertilized. (Use manure and chemical fertilizer.) Care must be taken to keep fresh manure away from the roots or the bulb or tuber itself.

The fertilizer should be worked well into the soil. The soil itself should be cultivated to a depth of 3 to 4 inches each week. During the blooming season, it is a good idea to cut off most of the buds to get bigger and showier flowers. Watering regularly is essential, and when the soil gets too dry, punching a few holes in it around the plant will help get the much-needed moisture down near the roots..

Sole/flounder is a refreshing sweet and mild flavored fish which allows it to be used in a variety of ways. With its long thin flesh, sole is often stuffed or used in other extravagant plate presentations. Because this fish is very thin it's a great choice to pan fry for a quick meal. Parmesan crusted sole is the best of both worlds, it's eloquent and fast. You can make it look even better with some fresh chives, tarragon or basil.

Even if you don't like fish, you'll love this recipe.Serves 4

4 ea.	Sole fillet (6-8 oz) ? if the fillets are small use 2 per serving
1 ? cups	Panko (Japanese bread crumbs)
? cup	Grated parmesan cheese
4 Tbsp.	Parsley - minced
? tsp.	Granulated garlic
? tsp.	Kosher salt
? tsp.	Pepper
? cup	Flour ? all purpose
3 ea.	Eggs
1 cup	Milk
4 Tbsp.	Butter
4 Tbsp. In a third pan place the flour.Take the sole fillets and season with salt, pepper and granulated garlic. Dredge sole in flour, then egg wash and finally in the parmesan/panko mix.

Pat the parmesan and panko into the sole until the mix sticks to the fish.In a large saut? pan heat butter and olive oil until hot. Carefully place sole in the pan and shake the pan to make sure the fish doesn't stick. When sole is golden brown, flip over and continue to cook. When sole is done (120? F internally), transfer to plate and top with lemon beurre blanc.Lemon Beurre BlancYields 1 cup

1 cup	White wine
1 Tbsp.	White wine vinegar
1 Tbsp.	Shallots
4 Tbsp.	Heavy whipping cream
? lb	Butter ? unsalted, chilled, cut into cubes
2 Tbsp.	Lemon pulp ? chopped (see note)
1 tsp.	Lemon zest - minced
1/8 tsp.	Kosher salt
1/8 tsp.	White pepper
In a sauce pan over medium high heat, combine wine, vinegar and shallots. Reduce until almost a syrup consistency.

Add cream and continue to cook reducing by half. Turn the heat to low and add butter cubes 2 at a time while stirring until all the butter is added and sauce is a creamy consistency. Season with salt and pepper.Note: If the butter is not chilled it will not incorporate into the sauce. Also if the wine mixture is not reduced far enough the sauce will be runny.Note: To make the lemon pulp, cut off the rind including the white part. Cut between the sections removing just the pulp.

At the same time removing any seeds. Place the pulp and any juice in a cup. It is also a good idea to zest the lemon first..

It goes without saying that we all want to look our best for the big day. So preparation is the key. Take care of your skin, hair and body in the months leading up to the wedding and you will have a good base to start from.Starting with body, you want to look slim and happy in your wedding gown not bloated and insecure so watch what you eat in the months coming up to the wedding and exercise regularly. A good tip to prevent bloating as sworn by Hollywood stars before the Oscars are to cut down on carb's the last few weeks before the big day. This should eliminate any unwanted bumps and bulges. To give your skin that healthy glow desired by all, you need to drink plenty of water, at least 2 liters per day, dehydrated skin looks dull, dry and unattractive.

The essential fatty acids found in salmon, tuna, nuts and seeds are essential for beautiful skin and hair, try to eat as much of these as possible. Jennifer Lopez swears by this, she is so well known for her glowing, perfect skin that her perfume was called Glow in reference to her glowing complexion.Keep your skin in shape with a daily cleansing, toning and moisturizing routine. It's very important that you are using the right products for your skin type. You can get advice from your local beauty sales counters on the best products out there for you. Remember to exfoliate your skin weekly, this will eliminate old dull skin cells and reveal new fresh skin beneath. You should have an exfoliating routine for your back, arms and chest or any other part of your skin that will be on show in your dress.

This will give a lovely healthy shine to your body. Remember to lash on loads of body cream after you exfoliate to sooth and moisten the skin.If you are unlucky enough to have dry frizzy hair or you use color and harsh styling products regularly, you need to give your hair regular hair masks to bring the life and shine back to your tresses. Most salons provide hair treatments with lovely essential oil and vitamin products, which are great for your hair and scalp as a lovely weekly or biweekly treat. The price can range from $30 to $80 depending on the salon. If you are more of a DIY girl why don't you purchase your own intensive moisturizing hair conditioner and do your own treatment. When you have put the treatment in the hair apply heat to using a hairdryer, then wrap your hair in cling film to keep in the heat, leaving as long as you desire this will prove a more intense treatment allowing the moisture to penetrate the hair cuticle.Your hair will be shining with health and smelling yummy on the big day.Now for the real magic "make up" of course.

Now that you are all glowing and beautiful nature sometimes needs a little help to give us that Hollywood beauty we all desire. The next step is your make up application. If you are going to get your make up done professionally you should shop around, just be cause they are "professionals" doesn't mean they are talented.Make sure you have an idea of what you want to look like on the day, bring bridal photos with make up styles you like and ideas on what hair style you will have also helps.A clean fresh look always works with definition on the eyes. Make up that looks good in person is usually too little for photographs; the last thing you want is your eye disappearing in the photos. A good idea is to bring an instant camera with you and take photos of the various make up looks you have tried out, between you discuss what you like and don't like.

Remember a photograph is less forgiving than a mirror. Finally your hair, the range of styles are endless. Do not try out any new hair colors or cuts in the months leading up to the wedding, You don't want to try something different and trendy and then hate it leaving you no time to grow it out. Stick to what you know suits you. Also going for the most up to date styles isn't recommended you don't want to look back on your photos in ten years time explaining to your kids how it was fashonable at the time. The first decision up or down? Wearing your hair up shows off your neckline and bone structure, always flattering in photographs. On the other hand more people are going for the sexy wavy tresses look that is being sported by Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston on her wedding day, very bohemian chic.Your wedding gown will ultimately dictate your hairstyle.

The rule of thumb is usually sexy wavy tresses equals' plain simple dress. The simple up style will flatter the more elaborate dress. Either way what you feel comfortable with and the prettiest with is the style for you, a happy comfortable bride is a pretty bride..

Equine Cushings disease is caused by a tumor in the pituitary gland, which is responsible for the production and regulation of hormones. Symptoms include a long, shaggy coat that does not shed, excessive drinking and urination, laminitis, a tendency for recurring infections in the hoof (foot abscesses), and a loss of muscle mass, especially along the topline and rump.At Eye of the Storm Equine Rescue, we've discovered what appears to be a cure for Cushings disease in horses. We're not licensed nor are we doctors, but we know what has worked for our horses and for lots of others, so we wanted to share our experiences in case it helps cure your own horse of equine Cushings disease. While looking through a nutritional healing book at Debra's Natural Gourmet in West Concord, Mass., I came across a sentence that said "Chasteberry feeds the pituitary gland." Chasteberry in recent times has been used mainly for "women's complaints." I know it works because it beats the crap out of PMS, you feel better in 20 minutes. "Hmm," I say, "I like chasteberry, let's see what it can do for our two Cushings horses."Bess, our 26 year old Shetland had obvious symptoms: long hair that didn't shed and she was a sway back. Not as bad as some, but still obvious.

I couldn't wait for the vet to take some blood to find out her "numbers." The results were positive for Cushings. I put her on one teaspoon twice a day, three weeks on and one week off. Though she began to shed her coat of "buffalo" hair almost immediately, she never was a very slick pony. But I was determined to keep her on the chasteberry one year before testing her blood again. If I saw results then, I would tell the world. One year later, after Bess' test results came back, the vet said, "I don't know what you're doing, but keep on doing it." Bess' numbers were down 33 points! I don't know exactly what these numbers represent, but evidently this never happens in real life! After one year of feeding her pituitary gland, had I managed to reverse her Cushings disease? I was very excited as this ailment affects the lives of millions of old (and not so old) horses in so many negative ways.

This disease is more common now than it has ever been in the past. No one really knows why, though I have my theories. That is another tale for another day.I was getting whole chasteberry in one pound bulk bags from Natural Gourmet and running it through a coffee grinder. The seeds are very hard and I figured it would come out the other end the same way they went in, unless we knocked the shells off them. You run the grinder until most of the pinging of hard berries can't be heard anymore.

You cannot grind them up completely, but that's okay. Horses are made to digest roughage. They handle the chunks just fine. You should have a grinder for this purpose only, as your coffee might taste funny if you use the grinder for both.Right around the time I was ready to tell the world about this "cure," another product came on the market called Hormonize. It is a liquid and costs around $45 per liter and lasts two weeks for your average size horse.

That's $90 per month to treat the horse. The developers of this product found it to be effective not only on mares in heat, but it also did some impressive things for Cushings horses, too. It is sold for this purpose as well. It is an all natural herbal remedy. A bit pricey, though.I checked out the ingredients.

It is a tincture of chasteberry! I think they call it vitex or monks pepper on the back. I'm not sure. It greatly saddens me that the treatment for such a devastating disease sells for so much.Horses don't need herbal tinctures. They can and do digest some pretty coarse stuff (have you ever tried to eat dry timothy hay?). They can not only digest the herb, but utilize it in that form beautifully.Bess, unfortunately, died at age 28 when she decided her mission was accomplished, so we never got a third blood test from her.

We have two other Cushings horses, and all of our older mares are on chasteberry as well. Junebug, who is 8 years old, was tested last year and we'll test her again soon to see where her numbers are. Snowdrop was never tested, but all her symptoms have disappeared and she is doing well at 24 years old.If any of you out there would like to try chasteberry, here's what to do. Go to your local health food store and special order one pound bulk bag whole chastetree berry from the Frontier herb company (please mention Eye of the Storm Equine Rescue when you do). You might want to order more than one bag so that when you're down to one you can reorder.

One bag will cost you less than $20 and will last a couple of months per horse.Run the berries through your coffee grinder and feed one teaspoon twice a day with feed. We give the same amount to horses and ponies. It works on both mares and geldings. Give it to them three weeks on and one week off all year round. It will even keep the mares from being quite so crabby in the spring. We also give them all vitamin E in the evening, vitamin C in the morning, and MSM.

No sugars or carbohydrates (not even a carrot). There are feeds out there that are low in both, such as Blue Seal Racer and some of the senior feeds (do some research). All in all, chasteberry is the answer. Even our two 30-year old mares don't have Cushings, only Bess, Junebug, and Snowdrop, who came to us with the disease and it appears to be reversed. I never had horses of my own get Cushings.

I have every horse in town that has Cushings on chasteberry and they're all doing great! This is a cheap, easy, healthy remedy for Cushings disease..

Home-made soups are so good for you - all that nourishing stock and chock-a-block full of vitamins and minerals. But ... who on earth could face boiling bones for hours on end during the scorching Spanish summer weather, not to mention preparing the soup once the stock is made? I don?t think it would tickle anybody?s fancy to then have to tuck into a piping-hot soup! For this reason, the Spanish came up with their wonderful, ice-cold soup - gazpacho - beautifully colorful, packed with goodness, cheap and simple to prepare, no cooking and ... most important of all, an absolute delight to drink. Traditional gazpacho originates from romantic Andalucia - that large, exotic southerly region of Spain which is home to such extensive Arabic influence.

The chilled, raw soup was originally made by pounding bread and garlic with tomatoes, cucumber and peppers but, nowadays, your electric blender renders this effortless! Olive oil endows it with a smooth, creamy consistency and vinegar adds a refreshing tang - just what you need when life gets too hot to handle! The spicy soup should be served in true Spanish style with small bowls of accompaniments - finely chopped peppers, cucumber, onion ... even hard-boiled eggs and croutons, if you feel up to it! Guests will then sprinkle what appeals to them on the soup. Traditional gazpacho is tomato-based, with most Spanish families having developed their own, unique recipes. However, nowadays, you will also find gazpacho recipes that have nothing to do with tomatoes - white, almond-based gazpachos, fruit-based gazpachos, etc. Do you suffer from insomnia? Could be that drinking gazpacho is the answer, for in Pedro Almodovar?s 1987 film "Mujeres Al Borde De Un Ataque De Nervios", various characters help themselves to the soup and promptly fall asleep! However, don?t fall asleep just yet as you haven?t read over the recipe! Ingrediants for 4 servings:

4 ripe tomatoes
1 onion
? red pepper
? green pepper
? cucumber
3 cloves garlic
50 g bread
3 dessertspoons vinegar
8 dessertspoons olive oil
Water
Salt/pepper
? chilli pepper (optional)
Garnishings:

2 hard-boiled eggs
? finely chopped onion
? finely chopped red pepper
? finely chopped green pepper
? finely chopped cucumber
Method:

Break up bread and soak in water for 30 minutes.
Skin tomatoes, remove seeds and stalks from peppers.
Peel cucumber, onion and garlic.
Chop onion, garlic, tomatoes, peppers and cucumber.
Place in electric blender.
Squeeze out excess water from bread and add to blender.
Add oil and vinegar.
Blend well.
If necessary, add sufficient water for soup-like consistency.
Pour into a bowl with ice cubes.
Fridge for a couple of hours.
Serve in bowls, with garnishings in separate dishes.
Gazpacho is best enjoyed sitting in the shade, looking out onto an azure sea, blue sky and golden sun and sands!.

Have you ever had the pleasure of strolling through a forest covered with fragrant pine needles? Can you imagine those pine needles being crafted into a basket, tray, or sculpture? In this article, you will discover the brief history of pine needle baskets and how to use these beautiful and fragrant works of art in your home decor.Pine needle basketry has most likely existed for as long as pine trees and people have shared the earth. Historical references do not indicate when pine needles were first used in baskets. However, due to the availability of pine needles in their area, Seminole Indians of South Florida are noted to be the first pine needle basket makers. The Seminole Indians used a bone or shell needle to sew bundles of pine needles together with fern roots, sisal, or swamp grass. Some of the baskets were used for feed baskets, to carry water, and for winnowing seeds.Modern pine needle basketry is noted to have begun during the Civil War times (1861-1865) when Mrs.

M.J. McAfee of Southern Georgia used pine needles that she bound together with cotton thread to replace a worn hat for her father. She claimed to be the originator of pine needle basketry as we know it today. In the present day, pine needle baskets are most often created using the coiling technique, which is one of the oldest and most universal methods of basket making. The basket is created by coiling and stitching one continuous bundle of pine needles around and on top of the row below. The foundation of the basket is formed with a bundle of pine needles bound together with various fibers such as raffia, split roots, birch paper, yucca, sinew, embroidery thread, yarn or waxed linen thread.

Decorative stitches and wrapping techniques are often used to make the basket strong as well as add an attractive element. The most common stitches used are the straight wheat stitch, spiral wheat stitch, fern stitch, popcorn stitch, diamond stitch, the Indian wrap, and numerous knot stitches. The pine needles come from a variety of different pine trees, such as Jeffrey Pine, Long Needle Pine, Monterey Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Bill Pine, and Gray Pine. The pine needles are gathered from the newly fallen top layer on the forest floor or picked from a fallen tree or limb and chosen based on their flexibility and length. Once the pine needles have been collected, they are carefully washed, cured, and then stored until use.The natural colors of the pine needles can be used or the needles themselves can be dyed.

Embellishments such as colored threads, buttons, beads, nut slices, and cones are often used to enhance the pine needle basket or project.Pine needle baskets make attractive statements in home decor. The following is a small list of ideas on how to use pine needle baskets to decorate your home:

Display one or a grouping on a bookshelf to create an eye catching display.
Use them like you would any basket to create an appealing arrangement of silk greenery to accent a special little table or chest.
Mount a grouping of two or more baskets on a wall for interesting wall decor.
Place dried flowers in an urn shaped pine needle basket and place it on a nightstand for a charming look next to your bed.
Use a rounded taller version as desk organizers for your pens and pencils and a shorter version for holding your clips, rubber bands, etc.
Place faux fruit in a pine needle basket tray for an attractive center piece on your dining room or kitchen table.
As you can see, the possibilities are endless on how to use pine needle baskets in your home decor.

The custom of grubbing for Earthnuts, or Pignuts is as ancient as mankind itself. Although these tasty tubers are beloved of pigs (hence the name) they are a most unusual and rewarding woodland snack and there was a time when they were a popular nibble for country children on their way to and from school. The fern like leaves appear along with the Lesser Celandine in the spring. During May and July they develop umbellifer heads with white flowers not unlike Cow Parsley. According to Gerard and others the Dutch once ate them 'boiled and buttered, as we do parseneps and carrots'. Unearthing a pignut is a delicate operation.

The root disconnects from the tuber very easily, which can be several inches from where the stem appears above ground.Follow the stem under the earth using careful scraping with a twig, fingernail or knife. Eventually you will reach the pignut which is covered with a chestnut coloured skin. If you can wash the nut at this stage it avoids getting muddy fingernails while peeling. As soon as I found the one shown in the picture, an earthworm appeared and dived into the hole it left!Scrape off the papery outer coating to reveal the Earthnut. The older name for Earthnuts is 'Earth Chestnuts' and this gives you a clue to their taste - a chestnut texture but with a more earthy taste.

There's nothing like carefully digging one of these up during a walk in the woods. Do it with your fingernails. As the earthy taste hits the senses you are drawn more completely into contact with the nature around you. A true 'pomme de terre'.Gerard's Herbal mentions that 'There is a Plaister made of the seeds hereof, whereof to write in this place were impertinent to our historie'....Probably witches again! Earthnuts get a mention in Shakespeare's 'Tempest', from Caliban as he promises: "I prithee, let me bring thee where crabs grow; And with my long nails I will dig thee pignuts". With thanks to R.

Maybee, R. Phillips and M. Woodwards version of Gerard's Herbal..
